Supporting the player strike, former president accuses BCB for match-fixing
The senior cricketers of Bangladesh went on strike against the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Monday. The Bangladesh skipper, Shakib Al Hasan voiced out his concerns over match-fixing supported by the board. However, the former President of the BCB added fuel to the already burning issue in Bangladesh. On Tuesday, Saber Hossain Chowdhury posted a tweet, supporting the strike led by the skipper. He criticized the promotion of match-fixing that is supported by the Bangladesh board. Chowdhury also mentioned that he himself has many times pointed out the issue. “BCB is only a national sporting body in the world that promotes institutionalized match-fixing,” he said, adding: “Unbelievable!!” “Flagged this issue many times myself,” he said. The British-lawyer at present is a member of Parliament. The domestic cricketers of Bangladesh are not paid as well as they should've been. With Chowdhury's tweet over the players' strike, BCB is under strict criticism by its own players. The local players have demanded the board to pay more to the Bangladesh coaches and the players. They have demanded a 50% hike for the first-class cricketers. The players on strike have also asked for increased fees in domestic cricket. Whereas, the expansion of national pay contracts and better benefits for the staff are their other demands. The Bangladesh skipper, Shakib Al Hasan in the conference stated his concern about corruption in domestic cricket. While the skipper is supported by a former chief of the board, the match-fixing news is not something new. “We all know the sorry state of our first, second and third division cricket,” Shakib said. It is certainly not the first when Bangladesh is in highlights for corruption charges. In 2014, the entire Bangladesh Premier T20 League was suspended due to a match-fixing scandal. The series was then reconducted the following year in 2015. However, the increasing criticism has raised doubts over the upcoming India-Bangladesh series. Bangladesh will tour India for a three-match T20 and two-match Test series. The series will start on November 3 and will go on for a month.
